Racquetball Self-Rating System General Guidelines
- Read all levels carefully and then rate yourself. Be certain that you qualify on all points of the preceding level as well as those in the level in which you place yourself.
- If any phase of your games fails to meet the standards in a given level, you are nor eligible for that ranking and must review the preceding levels until you find the rating that best describes your ability and level of play.
- If you are uncertain between 2 ratings, you should place yourself in the lower level.
Open
This player has consistency with all shots and serves, exercises excellent judgment in shot selection and consistently maintains correct court position. A top Club player who seeks outside tournament competition.
A Players
Have confidence in all types of forehand and backhand shots including kill shots, passing shots, Z shots and ceiling balls. Accurately controls placement of most variations of serves and uses good judgment in shot selection. Consistently keeps their opponent in the rear 1/3 of the court and has good success with offensive play from the rear 1/3 of the court, including return of service. Controls center court as a habit. Visual focus on opponent is strong and allows good anticipation. Participates in Club leagues, in-house tournaments and enjoys playing a variety of competitors.
B+ Players
Regularly attempt passing shots, ceiling shots and side wall kill shots with above average success at placement. Backhand is consistent defensively and is moderately successful as an offensive weapon. Sustains long volleys and is beginning to achieve consistent success with various serves. Returns most serves well and has above average consistency in hitting winners on service return. Works to control center court through good shot selection. Visual focus is on ball and opponent, not the front wall.
B Players
Control and place forehand shots in a game of medium pace but are not comfortable with the backhand. Can anticipate the balls angle with reasonable accuracy, but their footwork does not always allow them to achieve proper hitting position. Working on variety of serves, attempting ceiling balls, hits defensively on fast paced returns. Movement to center court occurs but is not consistent. Displays some sense of where opponent is when hitting.
C Players
Shots lack variety and consistency. Although the player has some forehand power, they can only occasionally control the angle and depth of their shots. Attempts offensive placement often with erratic results. Sacrifices consistency for power. Is learning to use the ceiling, is starting to play the ball off the back wall, and is occasionally succeeding in achieving center court position. Service variety is limited, but they can direct their serve at a moderate height to their opponents backhand.
Novice Players
Strokes and serves are in the development stage. Has some playing experience but is inconsistent. Learning to play shots off the back wall. Favors the forehand side. Understands what good court position is but their coverage is haphazard. Shots are generally defensive with only an occasional attempt at the front wall kill shot. Is beginning to attempt to place the ball while serving but has difficulty returning a well placed serve. Watches the front wall between shots. Rule knowledge is vague.
